"This anthology surveys some of the many twists and turns in the object-subject relationship, from 'thingness', everyday and useful objects to lost, performative and non-objects. This wide-ranging selection of 20th and 21st century texts brings the object to the fore as a prism through which to re-read contemporary art." [από το οπισθόφυλλο]._Artists increasingly refer to "post-object-based" work while theorists engage with material artifacts in culture. A focus on "object-based" learning treats objects as vectors for dialogue across disciplines. Virtual imaging enables the object to be abstracted or circumvented, while immaterial forms of labor challenge materialist theories. This anthology surveys such reappraisals of what constitutes the "objectness" of production, with art as its focus. Among the topics it examines are the relation of the object to subjectivity; distinctions between objects and things; the significance of the object's transition from inert mass to tool or artifact; and the meanings of the everyday in the found object, repetition in the replicated or multiple object, loss in the absent object, and abjection in the formless or degraded object. It also explores artistic positions that are anti-object; theories of the experimental, liminal or mental object; and the role of objects in performance. The object becomes a prism through which to reread contemporary art and better understand its recent past [περίληψη]On subject and object / Theodor Adorno -- Manipulating the self / General Idea -- Talking to myself : the ongoing autobiography of an art object / Adrian Piper -- In conversation with Guy Bellavance / Jean Baudrillard -- Where things enter into collective society / Michel Serres and Bruno Latour -- Vibrant matter / Jane Bennett -- The alienation of objects / Toby Ziegler and Elizabeth Johnson -- What is an object? / Marcus Steinweg -- A thing like you and me / Hito Steyerl -- Das ding / Jacques Lacan -- Piles / Kurt von Meier -- Signéponge/signsponge / Jacques Derrida -- Thing and object / Julia Kristeva -- Thing theory / Bill Brown -- From objects to things / Bruno Latour -- The thing itself / Arjun Appadurai -- Thing and object / Kristie Miller -- Art as object attachments : thoughts on thingness / Dieter Roelstraete -- Six painters and the object / Lawrence Alloway -- The man-made object / Gillo Dorfles -- Object as image : the Italian scooter cycle / Dick Hebdige -- Transformers / Stephen Willats -- The readymade and the double / Mike Kelley -- Simulated readymades by Fischli and Weiss / Boris Groys -- The elementary object / Mel Chin -- Friendly alien : object and interface / Lev Manovich -- The lamp and the ribbon / Joself Strau -- Grundrisse / Karl Marx -- Statement / Marcel Broodthaers -- Things / Georges Perec -- The use of an object and relating through identification / D.W.
